Update: After passing non-uniform provisions in 2017, Ohio Governor John Kasich signed Ohio Senate Bill 263 into law on December 19, 2018, following unanimous support from the Ohio State Senate. The law makes Ohio the 10th state to recognize remote online notarization, empowering anyone to notarize documents online from anywhere at any time.

The bill will go into effect September 19, 2019.

We’re thrilled to announce that Governor John Kasich has signed legislation to bring remote online notarization to Ohio. This news is part of the steady drumbeat of states who are quickly recognizing the benefits of online notarization. In 45 days, three states (Texas, Nevada, and now Ohio) have signed online notarization into law.

Here at Notarize, we’ve been leading the effort to update antiquated state laws and modernize the notarial process to create a more efficient and secure experience for users. Lawmakers and other stakeholders agree, and we’re thrilled to begin working with Ohio notaries to help serve our customers.

Like the laws in Virginia, Texas, and Nevada, notaries in Ohio will be able to use Notarize’s platform to serve customers from all 50 states, regardless of where they’re located at the time of the signing. This will give Ohio notaries the tools to meet the expectations of consumers and businesses who rely on notarizations in the digital economy - from any device and any location.

As we’ve stated before, we are committed to working with any state interested in empowering its notaries to serve customers online. The news in Ohio further validates the incredible response we’re seeing from our customers across the country.
