Online Notarization Becomes Law in Washington, D.C.

The nation's capital has officially adopted a new law on remote online notarization. On September 21, Bill 24-457 became law, making online notarization available to the district's notaries in the future.

Notarize applauds and thanks Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Secretary of the District of Columbia Kimberly Bassett, Chairman Phil Mendelson, and the entire Council of the District of Columbia for their efforts to deliver online notarization to commissioned notaries throughout the district.

D.C.’s notaries will be able to take advantage of the new law after the mayor's office establishes new regulations and processes for RON notaries. Please refer to the District's Office of Notary Commissions and Authentications website for more information.

Once available, the district's notaries will be able to serve residents living across the city and individuals located outside of the district utilizing technology. The district is home to some of the nation's leading organizations, law and consulting firms, and the federal government. Empowering the district's notaries to perform RON will help businesses and organizations digitize their back offices, enabling them to provide services more efficiently nationwide.

Notarize continues to work with lawmakers and regulators across the country to help increase access to online notarization. We are proud to have a team that is readily available to partner with governments everywhere and look forward to continuing this work to bring online notarization nationwide.
