New Jersey and Illinois Become States 36 & 37 to Pass Remote Online Notarization
2021 has been a historic year for remote online notarization (RON), with more than six states moving to enact permanent RON in their states. In July, Notarize was excited to welcome New Jersey and Illinois to that list, rounding that number to eight.
37 states now have RON laws on the books - there are only 13 states to go to get this transformative technology to more Americans. With the momentum behind RON, Notarize is excited to continue to work with our government and industry partners across the United States to help bring RON to notaries everywhere.
On July 22, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed A4250/S2508 authorizing RON making it state number 36!
Notarize applauds Governor Murphy and the New Jersey State Legislature for helping to bring RON to New Jersey. Pending any additional regulations or training from the New Jersey Department of the Treasury, Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services (DORES), RON will be available to notaries in New Jersey on 10/20/21. You can find more information from DORES here.
On July 23, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed SB 2664 which will authorize RON in Illinois after the Illinois Secretary of State issues regulations. By signing SB 2664 into law, Illinois officially became state number 37!
While we are encouraged to see Illinois carry the torch in helping to bring RON to the state, we were disappointed to see that remote ink notarization (RIN) was included in this law. Notarize and our industry partners are committed to providing a platform that consumers, businesses, and notaries can access that not only helps bring the notarization into the digital age, but also ensures a compliant, safe, and secure transaction. By failing to include multi-factor authentication, companies that utilize RIN as a service leave their users vulnerable to risk.
Multi-factor authentication is a core feature of RON and is central to making sure that all parties are protected from fraud by confirming that a signer is who they say that they are. We believe that RON is the best way to ensure that these protections are present when completing a notarization online. We look forward to continuing to partner with the Illinois General Assembly and the Secretary of State's office to make sure that the safety and security of all Illinoisans are always prioritized.
With four months left in 2021, we are encouraged by what has been accomplished this year alone. Notarize is proud to be a partner and resource to governments at all levels and we are excited to continue our work to help expand RON across the country.
